Stephen Longstreet was born Chauncey Weiner and then worked under the name to Henri (also spelled Henry) until 1939 at which point he began to use Stephen Longstreet. He first worked as a department store artist, cartoonist and illustrator. He began sketching jazz musicians in New Orleans in the 1930s, a subject he revisited often and in 1989 Longstreet wrote and illustrated Jazz from A to Z: A Graphic Dictionary . In addition to his work as an artist, Longstreet also wrote over 100 books and several films
